      <image:title>Blog - WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD ANYONE EVER WANT A NATURAL BIRTH? - Many women who want a natural birth are discouraged by naysayers who tell them there are no special cookies or trophies for women who birth unmedicated. They are told not to try to be a hero and they are reminded that it doesn’t make them a better woman or a better mom.</image:title>
      <image:caption>And they are correct. Fortunately, most moms who choose to give birth naturally are completely aware that there will not be a special prize waiting for them at the end. They know there’s no badge of courage and that motherhood will still be full of challenges no matter how they give birth. Trust me, moms who attempt a natural birth are not looking for a reward and they aren’t trying to prove that they are, in any way, better than the mom with the epidural or scheduled cesarean.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD ANYONE EVER WANT A NATURAL BIRTH? - Beyond the fact that one intervention leads to another, every pregnant woman needs to know that each intervention carries inherent risks with it. For example, narcotics given to decrease pain often lower the baby’s heart rate and he or she is more likely to have low APGAR scores at birth and slowed breathing [source].</image:title>
      <image:caption>Epidurals carry many risks that are often not fully discussed with a laboring woman who is ready for pain relief.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Anxiety in parenting and finding peace in Jesus - We lived on a half-acre lot on a busy highway right next to a bean field. My daughter loves being outside as much as I do but we always felt a certain amount of anxiety in our yard because of the traffic constantly zooming past our house. We had a porch swing and a fire pit along the West border of our yard right beside the bean field. Though I never let our daughter out of my sight, I had grown comfortable with letting her play around the swing while I worked in the greenhouse.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Occasionally, however, she’d let curiosity get the best of her and wander over to check out the beans. We had firm rules against this but she simply couldn’t stay away. I don’t remember exactly what I was working on in the greenhouse that day, I just remember that I was very focused and blissfully unaware of the world around me. The air felt quiet, safe, and peaceful when all of a sudden my attention was turned to a huge crop sprayer tractor tearing through the field right past our swing and exactly to where my toddler often snuck off to.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Anxiety in parenting and finding peace in Jesus - But almost as quickly as those fears consumed me, a still small voice breathed peace down in my soul. The Holy Spirit whispered, “I perfectly orchestrated these events this afternoon. I planned for the farmer to work in the field while your daughter was asleep inside. I am in control and I am watching out for you.”</image:title>
      <image:caption>With that, anxiety dripped out of me and comfort settled in. In the past, close calls such as this one had always been perceived as a WARNING sign flashing neon red lights. But things completely changed for me that day. Now, whenever I’m frightened by the “what ifs” and anxiety in parenting, I am immediately comforted by God’s protection. Every time there is a close call it is simply a reminder of His grace and His perfectly orchestrated plan. When something bad almost happens, it no longer has the power to fill me with anxiety if I don’t let it. Instead, I can let it build my faith in the God who has complete control. He knows. He’s watching. We don’t have to be afraid. In John 14 verse 27 Jesus tells us,</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Anxiety in parenting and finding peace in Jesus</image:title>
      <image:caption>Just like the Psalmist in chapter 23 verse 4, we can proclaim that "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff they comfort me." And finally, let Psalm 91:4-5 speak to you. "You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday." Everywhere we look in Scripture we are reminded that we do not have to be afraid. Like little lambs, God holds our children close to His heart. Even though they will walk on scary paths and inevitably face danger, God will be with them everywhere they go. He is ready to protect them with His rod and His staff at any moment. Consequently, we do not have to fear any of the things our culture tells us to fear.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 10 THOUGHTS I HAVE AS I ROCK MY TODDLER TO SLEEP - I originally wrote this list about a year ago and never got around to publishing it until now. Currently, I have a new little baby that I rock to sleep and we lay with my toddler as she falls asleep. So even though I'm no longer rocking a toddler, I still feel each of these emotions and thoughts reading back through. And while I'm grateful that I only rock one child right now, I am already so thankful that I took all of that time out of my day to hold my first daughter.</image:title>
      <image:caption>So if you're a mama who is feeling conflicted about rocking your child to sleep, let me just say, I see you. I understand all those thoughts. I encourage you to do what is best for you and your baby and then move forward confidently. And just like everyone says literally all the time, this phase will be over before you know it, so soak in those cuddles today. I hope as you read through this list you find that you're not alone and there are many moms out there that you can relate to. So let's get started with the ten thoughts I had (over and over again) during the countless hours I spent rocking my toddler to sleep.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - FOUR RANDOM THINGS I HOPE TO TEACH MY DAUGHTERS - Before I had kids, I thought I was destined to be a boy mom. Having sons seemed easier and more fun and I really was hoping to avoid the drama of raising girls. Truthfully, when we found out our first baby was a girl, I was a little shocked, confused and straight up scared.</image:title>
      <image:caption>To help me get used to the idea, I started writing out a few different things that I’ve learned about being a girl that I hoped my daughter would take to heart. Fast forward to the present and I now have two little girls that I love dearly and I cannot wait to pass these four random truths onto them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - FOUR RANDOM THINGS I HOPE TO TEACH MY DAUGHTERS - 3. WATCH OUT FOR COMMON DENOMINATORS (AND DEFINITELY DON’T BE ONE)</image:title>
      <image:caption>This wisdom comes from my own mother and is something I have lived by since I was a young girl. She taught me that in the world of girl drama, there is often someone who seems to be involved in disagreements with almost everyone. She may claim that other people are always the problem, but the fact that she has trouble getting along with so many different people makes her what my mom called “the common denominator” and likely, all of her relationships will be a little bit rocky. Unfortunately, common denominators are also often popular personalities making them hard to spot and making it easy to want to be friends with them.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/3684476a-778e-4c04-8bf0-f3dbfeb93eba/4-random-things-to-teach-my-daughters-graphic-min.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - FOUR RANDOM THINGS I HOPE TO TEACH MY DAUGHTERS - I want my girls to know that neither of these options are acceptable. I hope they always believe that they can tell me how they feel, even if those feelings are exaggerated, selfish, or hard to understand. One of my deepest desires is to work through those emotions with them. But it’s very important to me that they know that just because you feel a certain way does not mean that you can act like it.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Emotions are not the end all be all, they are not absolute truth, and they are not more important than how we treat others. I hope they can be brave when they feel scared, persevere when they feel hopeless, and most importantly, love when they feel angry. I’m sure being a girl mom is going to be full of challenges and this list doesn’t even scratch the surface of all of the things I’m going to have to try to teach my daughters. But writing them down has helped me organize my thoughts and feel more prepared for the day that I’ll need to address these issues. What would you add to the list?? I would love to hear it!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Myths about devotions for moms that keep them stuck</image:title>
      <image:caption>Another synonym we use for time spent reading the Bible is “quiet time” with God. So in our minds we often picture sitting on the back porch with a coffee cup in hand and peaceful nature sounds all around. But when this luxurious quiet time is hard to find, we end up skipping out on devotions altogether. I completely understand that we can focus a little better and dig a little deeper into scripture when we’re in a quiet room but we can’t focus on the Word at all if we aren’t taking the time to open up the Bible in the first place. Full disclosure, I often read my Bible while my toddler is watching TV. I truly think it’s worth the screen time and I’ve learned to just tune out the background noise.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Why I Choose to Breastfeed in Public Spaces - Fortunately, by the time I got pregnant with my second daughter, I had learned how to discreetly nurse in public using the "two-shirt method" and a full repertoire of nursing-friendly clothing.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Breastfeeding in a minivan is all too common because breastfeeding in public is difficult, inconvenient, or shamed upon.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Why I Choose to Breastfeed in Public Spaces - Both of these situations leave new moms feeling isolated which is extremely important to note because isolation and Postpartum Depression go hand in hand. As a society, we must make it easier for women and babies to get out of the house and this starts by getting comfortable with breastfeeding.</image:title>
      <image:caption>So I’ve resolved that I have to do my part. If just one woman sees me nursing my baby in public and this helps her feel more confident in leaving her home, getting fresh air, and feeding her baby then it’s worth it to me. The bottom line is this: both breastfeeding and the entire postpartum period are downright hard. But for so many reasons, not being able to feed a baby in public just makes it harder. So as a doula, a breastfeeding advocate, and a woman, I know now that it is my responsibility to nurse in public in support of my fellow moms and I hope that others will do the same ❤️</image:caption>

      <image:caption>By the time I went to bed, I was having very mild contractions at about 8 minutes apart and fell asleep peacefully. I woke up around 12:30 that night, October 5th, and lost my mucous plug. Contractions started coming quicker then but still irregularly. Some of them were harder than others. At times they were 4 minutes apart and I got shaky from all the adrenaline but then they would calm down and I could sleep.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Lainey’s beautiful birth center birth story - When we finally got home, I did some stairs, a few abdominal lifts, and laid in the exaggerated side lying position to try to get the baby in an anterior position because I assumed a posterior position was the reason for the back labor.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Unfortunately, this didn’t seem to be the case and even though contractions had spaced out to 8 minutes apart at that time, they were as intense as I ever remember them being before the epidural in my first labor. My body was shaking uncontrollably and I started to doubt my ability to labor unmedicated.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Lainey’s beautiful birth center birth story - Arriving at the birth center for our birth center birth was like a dream come true for me. As a doula, I absolutely love working at our local birth center. The calm and home-like atmosphere makes it a pleasure to work in and I truly believe it makes the birth process go more smoothly.</image:title>
      <image:caption>However, in my last pregnancy, I developed preeclampsia and had to go to the hospital to be induced so I was constantly worried that something similar would happen again this time. (Read my first birth story here.) I told the midwife right away that I was nervous about being checked and having my blood pressure taken but I knew I had great support and had prepared myself to take things as they come.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Lainey’s beautiful birth center birth story - I first spent a good 30 minutes laying on my side with the peanut ball as my sister, my photographer, and my doula joined my husband, mom, and I. After that, I spent quite a while on the stairs doing lunges and some squats to open my pelvis and move the baby down.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I kept my focus on fully recovering in between contractions and tried to feel as normal as possible when not in pain. I made small talk, told jokes, and relied on my husband who is an expert at keeping the mood lighthearted. Because of this, contractions came and went quickly and they felt much more manageable.</image:caption>

I climbed in and turned on my labor playlist which was a combination of worship music, hypnobirthing tracks, the Childbirth In the Glory album, piano instrumentals, and the sweet love song I walked down the aisle to, Songbird by Eva Cassidy. The water and music were so soothing and I loved being able to fully relax.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I sat in a variety of positions in between contractions but always always always, I made sure to get on my hands and knees at the beginning of a contraction so that my doula and my husband could easily apply counter pressure. I cannot say enough about counterpressure. Without it, contractions were nearly unbearable, but with it, they were much more manageable. I needed it every single contraction from beginning to end and I’m so thankful I had a great birth center birth team who could make that happen for me. They’re the real MVPs.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Lainey’s beautiful birth center birth story - I became so very loud during this phase, roaring at the top of my lungs with each push. I couldn’t help it and it provided relief. At one point, thunder shook the sky right after I pushed and I felt a sense of amazement, as if God and the Earth were pushing with me.</image:title>
      <image:caption>At other points, I simply yelled “I’M SO MAD!!” because these contractions were so painful and I didn’t seem to be making progress. There was also a time when I got a bit panicky and whispered to my husband that I really didn’t think I could do it. He, of course, assured me that I could and that I would and I continued to press on.</image:caption>

It was the absolute weirdest feeling but I was relieved to be making progress.</image:title>

      <image:caption>I was slightly in shock but laser-focused when they told me the head had come out and I would birth the shoulders in the next contraction. With a big push at 6:14 am, the baby came out “swinging on the umbilical cord” according to my husband (I told you he keeps things lighthearted). The midwife handed the baby to me and we found out we had another sweet baby girl! I was so happy, so relieved, and yet I couldn’t show any emotion on my face at that point during our birth center birth.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Lainey’s beautiful birth center birth story - Lainey eagerly latched on 15 minutes after she was born and nursed for around 90 minutes. She then had her newborn exam where we found out she weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces, was 19 inches long, and had a 13-inch head. Next, she cuddled up skin-to-skin with her daddy and they both slept for about 4 hours straight.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I ate several pieces of homemade bread, a Burger King breakfast sandwich, and took a healing herbal postpartum bath. Then we packed everything up and we were home by 1 pm.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The whole experience was truly surreal and honestly a dream come true for me. As someone who absolutely loves birth and a birth center birth, I’ve spent the last 7-8 years hoping to have such a wonderful experience and words cannot express how thankful I am to God, to my birth center birth team, and to everyone else who was praying and cheering us on. Bringing life into this world is the most humbling and rewarding gift and I’m so honored to be this little girl’s mama ❤️</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Navigating the Pregnancy Journey at 15 Weeks - At 15 weeks, I feel like my belly is huuuuge compared to my first pregnancy. Last time I was just barely starting to pop at this point but now I’m well into my maternity jeans and a complete stranger commented on my pregnant belly the other day! (He must have been one brave man .)</image:title>
      <image:caption>I’m constantly deciding between wearing something fitted that accentuates my growing belly and wearing something looser that still hides it (barely). It’s that tricky stage where I mostly just look like I have a food baby, so it takes a bit longer to pick out clothes lately. I’m really looking forward to having a nice round belly to dress in the summer this time around. Even though being a second-time mom means I’m getting bigger faster, there are certainly some perks to this as well. As I mentioned before, this baby is a mover and I’ve been so thrilled to be able to feel it every once in a while. In my first pregnancy, I didn’t start feeling the baby until 17 weeks but because experienced mothers know what it feels like, they can often feel the baby much sooner. It’s such a sweet and wondrous part of pregnancy and I’m so grateful for it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Navigating the Pregnancy Journey at 15 Weeks - If I've had any cravings so far, it’s been orange juice and grapefruit. I’ve always loved orange juice but I’ve NEVER liked grapefruit before. A couple of weeks ago, we celebrated Easter at my grandparent’s home. They had just returned from Texas with fresh grapefruit and it suddenly looked so delicious to me. I decided to try it, expecting not to like it and surprisingly I couldn’t stop eating it! The same thing happened with green peppers in my last pregnancy (so weird.)</image:title>
      <image:caption>Anytime I experience strong cravings I’m always intrigued by why my body seems to want that particular food. So I usually do some research on that food and see what’s in it that my body could be needing. Of course, grapefruit is full of Vitamin C, antioxidants, calcium and fiber which are all things I could use more of. But I was especially amazed to find out that there is some evidence that grapefruit can actually lower blood pressure all on its own. As I mentioned earlier, this is very important to me to try to avoid getting preeclampsia this pregnancy. It’s amazing how well the human body knows what it needs.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Navigating the Pregnancy Journey at 15 Weeks - DECISIONS DECISIONS</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you follow me on social media, you may know that my husband and I are currently debating if we’re going to find out the sex of the baby this time. I think it would be an amazing surprise to wait until birth. What a reward after all that labor. But my husband is so excited to find out ASAP and I can’t really blame him. Our ultrasound is scheduled for mid-May so we have a couple more weeks to decide. Either way, we can’t wait to see the baby! That’s all for now! What was life like for you at 15 weeks pregnant? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for reading ❤️</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Our Sweet Summer Wedding Memories and Lessons - Our wedding was on a Friday night and started at 7:30 pm. I loved the idea of an evening wedding and we wanted to have Saturday to travel so this worked best. Our ceremony lasted about 30 minutes and included vows that we wrote together. They were personal, meaningful and were a true promise we made to each other. But neither of us wanted to take the mic and make a speech so we still repeated them after the pastor like traditional vows.</image:title>
      <image:caption>To celebrate our 4 year anniversary, I asked my sister-in-law Karen to write our vows on a sign to hang above our bed. Of course, she did an amazing job and we are obsessed. To see more of Karen's work, visit her site here.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>"There are generally 4 Stages in childbearing, which warrant slightly different Chiropractic care and different things we are looking for. We progress through each stage and the treatments might differ slightly. Below I listed the 4 stages and what we work on and some of the benefits you can see at each stage. Preconception More regular menstrual cycle Optimal uterine function Prepares the body for healthy implantation Ensures proper nerve supply to reproductive organs Pregnancy Balance, alignment, and flexibility Less morning sickness and nausea Detection, prevention, and correction of fetal malposition Less back pain, neck pain, and joint pain</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 7 Tips for a Fast and Fun Wedding Reception - Otherwise you end up wandering around during the reception trying to make sure you talk to everyone. Not only is this impossible, but it also means you either miss out on your chance to eat and dance or you do all three which takes double the time and really stretches out how long your reception lasts.</image:title>
      <image:caption>There will still be plenty of time to talk more with your close friends and family again but since you’ve already touched base with everyone, you won’t be spending tons of time making small talk with your great aunt’s new boyfriend during your reception.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - 7 Tips for a Fast and Fun Wedding Reception - To combat this, make sure your officiant gives good instructions after the ceremony and make a clear path to your dinner tables. Literally lining the pathway helps as well as good signage if there’s quite a distance between the ceremony and reception areas.</image:title>
      <image:caption>However, the best way to get people seated quickly is by providing an incentive and what gets people more motivated than food? So salad or cheese ball or some other appetizer out on the table and ready to be eaten is the easiest way to get your reception started promptly.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 7 Tips for a Fast and Fun Wedding Reception</image:title>
      <image:caption>Thanks to the invention of the “First Look” where the groom sees the bride for the first time on camera before the ceremony, this is becoming much more popular. Not only does this keep your guests happy because they aren’t struggling to find something to do while you take ten million pictures, but it also gets your reception started earlier and you move on to the rest of your life quicker! Remember, that’s the goal here.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/dda5bc4f-8d1d-4719-98fa-69dc2f7f5197/wedding+party.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - 7 Tips for a Fast and Fun Wedding Reception - So after everyone was seated, the bridal party was announced and my dad prayed over the meal. I then had my emcee start a playlist of five songs totaling somewhere around 20 minutes that played while we ate dinner. As soon as it finished, we knew it was time to start the toasts. Likewise, I put together a playlist for dancing that simply played from start to end.</image:title>
      <image:caption>By doing this, I could accurately plan out exactly how long my reception would last and it kept things moving along nicely.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/b6b201d0-83d3-444a-be9b-f68fa678fdbb/davids+toast.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - 7 Tips for a Fast and Fun Wedding Reception - (Remember these dances were timed out on the playlist so I knew exactly how long this portion will take.)</image:title>
      <image:caption>This cuts back on time tremendously because it’s an easy way to multitask. People eat and watch a show simultaneously all the time and because your bridal party and parents are the first to get their food, they are usually mostly done eating by then anyway.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/3ce4f1cf-ceee-4fa6-8d34-a71171a6e30c/People-dancing-at-wedding-reception-min.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - 7 Tips for a Fast and Fun Wedding Reception</image:title>
      <image:caption>Not only does this majorly cut down on time but it also gives those non-dancers something to do besides awkwardly watching the dancers dance. And while there are some dedicated people who want to be on the dance floor the entire time, most people are happy to take a break for a song or two while they eat a couple of cupcakes.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/1de1725f-a3f6-41aa-aaf4-a83079f37112/mustang-sendoff-at-wedding-min.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - 7 Tips for a Fast and Fun Wedding Reception</image:title>
      <image:caption>Whatever it is, announcing it will keep everyone accountable to staying on schedule because you all have the same goal in mind. Additionally, giving people this information will make it more likely that they stick around to see you leave because they know exactly what to expect and will be motivated to wait for a fun send off. This way you will likely be one of the first couples to leave your wedding which was a high priority for me.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - To The Mama Whose Natural Birth Plan Fell Through</image:title>
      <image:caption>But then along the way, things got a little tricky. Maybe your baby was breech. Maybe your water broke but contractions would not start. Or you were two weeks past your due date. Your blood pressure spiked. Your baby was estimated to be quite large. Maybe contractions came on strong and 2 minutes apart when you were only 3 centimeters dilated and they never slowed down. Or you stopped progressing at 5 centimeters. Maybe you were just not okay with how out-of-control your body felt at 7 centimeters. Maybe your contractions stopped altogether at 9.5 centimeters. Or you pushed for hours and the baby did not descend. Honestly, maybe the pain was just way too much and you simply couldn't do it anymore. So you transferred to the hospital, you were given Pitocin, or they broke your water, you took narcotics, or you got an epidural, you had an episiotomy, or you delivered your baby via cesarean. You experienced firsthand the dreaded cascade of interventions and your natural birth plan fell through.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Homemade Bone Broth and Garlic Onion Tea - Bone broth is also a great first food for babies as it's so good for their gut health.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I started making broth when I was pregnant and couldn't take other medicine but it works so well that it's always my first option now. Whenever I start to feel the tiniest bit sick I drink a cup or two a day and my symptoms just quietly slip away. I love it! You can make bone broth with chicken, turkey, beef or really any animal bones. I personally think turkey gives the best flavor but today I used chicken. I start by cooking a whole chicken in a crock pot with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. You can omit these if you're cooking for a baby. I usually start this around noon so the chicken is ready for supper.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/d5bd5e4d-9f05-496a-8fc2-0e8c662758a7/celery-and-carrot-scraps-min.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Homemade Bone Broth and Garlic Onion Tea - While that's cooking I prepare my vegetables. First, I wash whole carrots and celery. I only use the carrot peels and the celery tops in my broth so I set them aside for later. I then cut the carrots and celery up and put them on a sheet pan to save for dinner.</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/0cee5004-d50e-48b1-8362-8cf58c1563c4/garlic-and-onions-min.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Homemade Bone Broth and Garlic Onion Tea</image:title>
      <image:caption>Then I cut an onion in half but I leave as much of the peel on as I can, as long as it looks healthy. I treat the garlic bulb similarly although it can be a little tricky to cut in half so if you have issues you can cut each clove in half instead. But again, leave the peel on. There are so many vitamins in vegetable peels that will then be in your broth.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/e4ba3f3d-5bfb-466a-98e2-e66e97db2594/sheet-pan-dinner-min.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Homemade Bone Broth and Garlic Onion Tea - About twenty minutes before the chicken is ready I put olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder on the carrots and celery I reserved and roast them in the oven at 375 degrees.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Once the chicken is cooked through I take it out of the crock pot, leaving all of the juices inside the pot. After it rests a bit I start to take it off the bone. I will be honest, if you want a nice tutorial on how to beautifully carve the chicken, you're going to have to look at someone else's blog . I haven't mastered that so I just cut and pull as much off as I can. I use about half of it mixed in with my roasted veggies for dinner and the other half I use throughout the week for chicken salad, soup, or casseroles.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - Homemade Bone Broth and Garlic Onion Tea - All the bones and the entire chicken carcass go back into the crockpot with the juices and the celery tops, carrot peels, onion, and garlic on top. You may add more salt if desired. Then I fill my crock pot the rest of the way with water and turn on low for the next 12-24 hours. Personally, I think it fills my house with a nourishing aroma although I know some do not enjoy the smell. Hopefully you do!</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Birth Doulas: What They Do and Why It Matters - Most doulas are self-employed or are in partnership with a few other doulas. Some doulas are employed at hospitals or birth centers but this is not as common. Because they are self-employed, doulas typically go wherever their clients birth. They may attend home, hospital or birth center births and if the client needs to transfer care, the doula goes too.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Birth Doulas: What They Do and Why It Matters - A doula does not make any decisions for her clients but instead informs them of the risks and benefits of every option and then supports them in whatever they decide. She is careful not to try to persuade them one way or the other but rather she presents non-biased, evidence-based information and lets the clients run with that knowledge.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Furthermore, before the birth the doula will teach the pregnant person and her birth partner (her husband, boyfriend, mom etc) different techniques that they can use throughout the labor to manage pain, fully relax, and keep progressing. Finally, the doula will also help her clients prepare for postpartum. They may discuss things like household chores, setting guidelines for visitors, and understanding postpartum mood disorders. After these meetings, both the mother and the doula should have a pretty good idea of how they plan to manage labor and postpartum.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Birth Doulas: What They Do and Why It Matters</image:title>
      <image:caption>However, a doula is still a valuable asset even if the client wishes to have a medicated birth or is planning a c-section. In these situations a doula can still help her through early labor, she can set up her birthing environment, talk her through pushing, and protect her wishes for the postpartum period discussed in the next section.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Ecological Breastfeeding and Natural Child Spacing - So let’s dig into these principles, shall we?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Ecological breastfeeding works by increasing the time spent at the breast. More time suckling means prolactin levels stay higher for longer. High prolactin levels suppress the ovulatory hormones. Therefore, the more you nurse, the longer you can prevent pregnancy naturally. So without further ado, here’s the 7 principles!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Delicious Third Trimester Pregnancy Mocktail - Just because you can’t have a cocktail while pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your drink! In fact, with this "Third Trimester Pregnancy Mocktail," your taste buds will be happy and your uterus will thank you.</image:title>
      <image:caption>That's because it contains red raspberry leaf tea and dates, both of which are said to have positive effects on labor. Plus it includes spearmint, fresh raspberries, lemon juice, and honey to create a yummy concoction. This makes it a perfect drink to sip as the ball drops on New Year's Eve or in the morning for breakfast, or during the early labor phase.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Delicious Third Trimester Pregnancy Mocktail - In pregnancy, red raspberry leaf tea strengthens the uterus so that when labor hits, contractions are more powerful and effective which may make labor shorter and less painful. In fact, drinking red raspberry leaf tea is #8 in my list of 35 Things To Do In Early Labor. It may also make the amniotic sac stronger which reduces the chance of waters breaking before labor. It’s even said to support a healthy breastmilk supply.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Red raspberry leaf tea is not without controversy, however. Lack of testing means this herb is not exactly scientifically supported and care providers widely vary their recommendations toward it. While some believe the tea can be safely taken throughout the entire pregnancy and may even help protect against miscarriage, other midwives and doctors may advise that it not be taken until the second trimester, the third trimester, the 34th week or even later. As always, consult with your care provider before you start drinking red raspberry leaf tea. If you decide you're not ready for it, simply substitute green tea in this recipe. It will taste just as good!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Delicious Third Trimester Pregnancy Mocktail - Of course, like most things, the use of dates in pregnancy isn't supported by everyone and it's important to do your own research and check with your care provider before consuming a large number of dates. They are high in sugar so if you have gestational diabetes or are closely watching sugar intake, it may be best to avoid dates or at least eat them with protein, fat, or fiber.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The women in the study did not start eating 6 dates a day until they were in their 36th week. Therefore, the general recommendation is to start eating 6 dates a day at 36 weeks but a few dates here and there before that time is most likely just fine. However, if you're not yet at the 36 week mark or uncomfortable with the idea, simply leave the dates out of your Mocktail. No harm there!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>And then we waited and waited to see if we could continue having a healthy pregnancy all the way through an at home birth. I thought my anxiety would subside when we reached term, knowing my body had done its job carrying her and she would be developed enough to thrive outside the womb.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - Ironically, the anxiety about my baby’s health also intensified when I hit term. Would something happen to her before I even had the chance to go into labor? I worried about her descent through the birth canal. I worried about my placenta and her umbilical cord. Would they continue to sustain her? And I wondered most of all about her first moments earthside. Would she be ready and prepared to breathe on her own?</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - Toward the end of my pregnancy, I had gotten all of the answers I needed from my midwives in regards to what a resuscitation for a home birth looks like. I knew that if Halle had any trouble breathing at all, my midwife would first help her drain fluid, then give some rescue breaths if needed. I found out that my midwives had continuous training in resuscitation and are beyond prepared, along with an at home birth assistant, to help my baby transition. I learned that Halle would experience and be impacted by her first moments and that as parents, we can help her by staying calm and speaking to her gently. I talked with my doula and my birth assistant further on the subject and they both reassured me that my baby will have what she needs.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - Kevin and I had made reservations at a favorite restaurant in town and I was really hoping we could have one last fancy dinner before baby. I had been having some random tightening but couldn’t quite tell if they were actually contractions or not and the bleeding continued throughout the day.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This bleeding was both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it was exciting that something was happening. On the other hand, it was quite triggering. The uneasiness, the fear, the cramping, it felt too reminiscent of my previous miscarriages and I couldn’t help but feel some anxiety rising. Still, from a third perspective, it was helpful to work through this anxiety before contractions became very intense and it gave me a chance to mentally prepare for the home birth journey that was indeed happening soon. Thankfully, we made it to dinner. After finishing some delicious scallops I started to feel confident that I was having real contractions spaced about 15 minutes apart. We went for a drive around the lake but they began to feel uncomfortable and I wanted to go home. They never really progressed a whole lot further and I went to bed. Contractions did continue all night long but they were random and infrequent.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - I woke up the next morning and things weren’t progressing. This was ok with me though because my oldest daughter had her opening day of t-ball that day and I didn’t want to miss it. So we enjoyed her first game, came home for a picnic lunch outside, fed the goats, and took a nap. Then my husband took the girls to his moms so I could have an evening of peace. I enjoyed cleaning my house one last time in preparation for our home birth, I had a nice quiet dinner, and I watched a movie while laying on the couch with my peanut ball. My parents came to visit and contractions were about 8 minutes apart.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Slowly, but surely, I knew we were getting there. Through the night contractions were coming more frequently with pretty intense back labor. With each surge, I would wake myself up, move to hands and knees, put a little bit of counter pressure on my own back, breathe through it… and then plop right back down in bed to sleep until the next one. I could not fully wake up and just wanted to keep sleeping.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - My mom came over and at 8:30 am we decided to go for a walk. We walked down my road and contractions quickly started coming every 4 minutes. During each one, I would do an abdominal lift and tuck to try to get my baby to rotate, in case a posterior position was causing the back labor.</image:title>
      <image:caption>A few different neighbors drove past me during a contraction on their way to church and told me later they could tell something was happening and they were praying for me throughout the morning.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - When Jayde arrived we decided to do some lunges on my stairs and we did more abdominal lift and tucks to see if we could alleviate the back labor by encouraging her to rotate. No luck. I then did a side-lying release in my bed and got into the tub around 11:20. My midwife, the birth assistant Rachel, and my sister-in-law/videographer Karen arrived right around then.</image:title>
      <image:caption>There I was, in my tub, with some of my favorite fellow birth workers in my bathroom watching me. I joked that it felt just like a birth worker gathering and Rachel reminded me to step out of my birthworker logical brain and step into my instinctual birthing brain. Lauren took my blood pressure and found it to be exactly in the normal range to which I exclaimed, “NAILED IT.” I was so thankful to have avoided preeclampsia once again. She listened to my baby, I felt quite reassured that all was well, and the excitement of being in labor finally set in.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story</image:title>
      <image:caption>Lauren and I had a quick chat about if she would check my cervix and we both decided it was unnecessary for the time being. It was so great to not have that disturbance. Because contractions continued to be solely in my back, I expressed to my at home birth team that I wasn’t sure if they were strong enough yet. Don’t get me wrong, the intensity of the contractions in my back was commanding, but because I couldn’t feel them in my belly, I wondered if they were effective. Lauren felt my belly during the next contraction and assured me they were strong, releasing me to fully trust my body.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/854c299f-5a6d-47fc-a4fa-ef4a32ab0e60/halle-at-home-birth-contraction.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - From there, every contraction seemed to get more intense than the one before. I went from joking around in between contractions to being unable to open my eyes while waiting for the next one.</image:title>
      <image:caption>At one point, I asked my husband to go get the pool noodle I bought to give me some buoyancy. This was a bit of a joke between us because he thought the noodle was hilariously much too big for our tub. I insisted, however, that I wanted it between my legs so that I could float in between contractions.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/6728eb62-9c3a-44cd-a151-b611e0ff9f60/halle-at-home-birth-tub-position.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - In short, he was entirely correct. The noodle was far too big and when the next contraction came I was left awkwardly flipping around, trying desperately to get to my hands and knees. Caught in a fit of laughter during a tough contraction was a weird highlight of this labor for both Kevin and me. I was done with the pool noodle after that and it never returned.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Contractions continued to intensify and at one point I very nearly said out loud, “my water is going to break with the next one.” Choosing to stay silent instead, I didn’t want to jinx myself. But sure enough, during one of the next 2 or 3 contractions, my water bag popped at 12:55 pm.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - I remember saying to Lauren, “things are about to get real now aren’t they?” She replied with a simple “uh huh” and began moving quickly to prepare.</image:title>
      <image:caption>At the top of the very next contraction, an urge to push surfaced. I asked my team to put a shower curtain and some pads on the floor beside my bed and I wanted to get out of the tub. They helped me move to my hands and knees on the prepared birthing space and reality set in. It was time to deliver my baby. I probably had about 5 contractions after that and with each one she moved closer to her birth. The intensity of her head moving through the birth canal was completely overwhelming. I seriously felt like there was no way she would fit but I knew that she had to and that it was my job to get her there. I wanted to stay as calm as possible and let her slowly move through, but my body was forcing me to push as hard as I possibly could.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - In the break before one of those contractions I knew it was nearly her moment of at home birth. I remember whispering a little prayer, “Jesus let her be ready to breathe.”</image:title>
      <image:caption>Here it was: the final test of her viability. I moved into a kneeling position with one knee and one foot on the ground. With the next contraction, her head was out, the biggest relief.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/64709753680e9f6d8fc8201e/b1ab6108-1e60-49fd-93be-8a9ed9b46b63/halle-at-home-birth-baby.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - I waited a bit and then pushed for her shoulders and she was born at 1:25 pm, giving a couple raspy, but reassuring squeals immediately after her at home birth. She was then a bit stunned and waited to take her next breath. Lauren picked her up to help her drain fluid while Kevin and I, after weeks of preparing for this moment, calmly welcomed and encouraged our Halle girl to breathe. I rubbed her back and talked to her letting her know she was ok and we were excited to see her.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Everyone in the room held their breath with her, each of them knowing how much this moment meant to me. But what I remember the most was how calm and at peace I felt. She would be ok, I knew. That was the winning piece of this birth for me. After 45 seconds she began crying again and everyone exhaled with her.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - Lauren then handed her to me and with joy, I put her skin to skin, feeling fully present and aware of my baby in that moment, quite unlike my first two births. I couldn’t believe how little and healthy and perfect she looked. My girls and my mom then came in to peek and my 3 year old whispered, “I see her rainbow tail!” referring to her umbilical cord, still purple and attached.</image:title>
      <image:caption>At about 1:33 I delivered the placenta. Shortly after, my husband cut the cord, my team prepared my bed, and we climbed right in. Miss Halle Larken began breastfeeding, my husband brought me a snack, the girls came into bed and everyone else cleaned up. My first two babies were 6 lb 10 oz and 6 lb 12 oz respectively. Throughout the pregnancy, I often wondered about what her weight would be and my logical brain told me it would be 6 lb 14 oz, following the pattern perfectly. We all thought she looked much smaller however so I was quite surprised when she weighed in at 6 pounds 15 ounces, my biggest (but still so tiny) baby yet.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Inside Halle’s Inspiring At Home Birth Story - Within a couple hours we were in the clear, tucked in bed and ready for a nap. I was, and still am, in awe of what had just happened. All of my worrying, all of our waiting, all the wondering, and now here she was, in my arms after a totally smooth and uncomplicated at home birth. Though early labor was long, it gave me the time I needed to process and mentally prepare. Once active labor started it was somewhere around 3 hours (depending on how you calculate it) before the pushing stage began. There was 25 minutes of pushing and no tearing, something I always get pumped about.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Most importantly, she transitioned so well and has been healthy ever since.</image:caption>
